Have your Say: MPs' Expenses and Allowances
15 September 2009 Update: The Committee's consultation on MPs' expenses has now closed. The original deadline for submitting responses was Friday 5th June, but the Committee continued to accept submissions until today to give as many people as possible the opportunity to make a submission. We regret that we will not be able to consider any further submissions. The Committee is due to publish its final report in October 2009.
The Committee on Standards in Public Life is currently gathering evidence for its Inquiry into MPs' Expenses.
MPs are currently able to spend and/or claim back money spent on items such as support staff; constituency offices; additional accommodation if they are required to work away from home; and travel. In recent months there has been a lot of criticism of the way in which MPs have used these allowances.
The aim of our Inquiry is to reform the system of MPs' expenses to create a new set of rules which are trusted by the public, and which give MPs the support they need to do their jobs.
Our Inquiry will be wide ranging. We want to give everyone a chance to have their say. We want to know your views on the rules governing MPs expenses and who should be responsible for setting the rules in future. We will also be considering the arrangements for monitoring and enforcement and we welcome any views you might have on this as well.
For more details about the Committee's Inquiry, including how to submit evidence or make your views known, you can download a copy of the Issues and Questions paper (see below). Or contact the Committee at the address or phone number listed below and we will send you a copy in the post.

All submissions, with the exception of those that appear to the Committee to be defamatory, will be displayed on the Committee's website and be available for public scrutiny as soon after they are sent to the Committee as is practicable. They will also be published with the final report. Where there are genuine arguments for confidentiality, respondents should discuss this with the Committee's Secretary.
The closing date for this consultation is 5 June, we may not be able to consider your views if we receive them after this date.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sir Christopher Kelly KCB
Chair of the Committee on Standards in Public Life
